250th Anniversary of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence
Be transported back to May 20th, 1775 when Mecklenburg rang the first bell of Independence as the people declared themselves free and independent of the kingdom of Great Britain. Held in “the square” at the corner of Trade and Tryon Streets in uptown Charlotte, this celebration includes a number of speeches reflecting pride in Charlotte’s rich historical legacy, the presentation of a proclamation, and a reading of the Meck Dec followed by cannon and musket firing salutes from 18th century re-enactors that are accompanied by shouts of “Huzzahs” from the attending crowd. Finally, a procession of an SAR honor guard marches to Settler’s Cemetery, fires a musket salute, and lays a wreath at the grave of Thomas Polk, the founder of Charlotte. Re-enactors in historic dress, drum and fife music, as well as a Memorial Musket Volley and Cannonade will make this celebration in the heart of the Queen City one to remember for another 250 years!

Decorating with evergreens, especially those bearing fruit such as mistletoe, ivy, and holly along with evergreen boughs from cedars and pines, was a common practice to welcome the winter season. The evergreens used for decorations symbolized the promise of Spring and everlasting life, a custom dating back to Roman times and adopted by many cultures through the ages. The custom of kissing under the mistletoe also comes from the British Isles, where the Nordic goddess Frigg vowed to grant a kiss to all who passed under the mistletoe to prevent violence and loss. Today, mistletoe is associated with winter luck and love, and kissing under the mistletoe remains a custom to this day.
In addition to experiencing the site, the Torance Store offers sundries, local goods like honey and lavender, locally made artisan crafts and gifts, historical books and toys, stationary and home decor, and more! Earl Jam: A Tribute to Earl Scruggs
Tony Trischka honors the music of Earl Scruggs, pioneer of the three-finger banjo style and one of the most important musicians in bluegrass, with special guest Woody Pratt.
Trischka recently came into possession of extremely rare recordings of jam sessions with Scruggs and John Hartford, and he’ll be debuting Scruggs’s note-for-note solos from a few of these. Together with his ace band—Michael Daves on vocals and guitar, bassist Jared Engel, fiddler Brittany Haas, and sometimes Maddie Witler on mandolin — they will trace the story of Scruggs from his childhood to his final years.
Special Guest and Grammy award winner Woody Platt is best known as the former guitarist and vocalist for the Steep Canyon Rangers, a bluegrass band formed in North Carolina that often plays with comedian/banjoist Steve Martin.
